I don’t know about you, but when I think about racing, I think about the Think City. Well, I do now, anyway. The VW Bug-ish electric car from Sweden is about to go race happy. The special edition 2011 Think City Racer is being made for the upcoming CityEV race in Europe (part of a three-pronged EV race, the other two categories being SportsEV and PrototypeEV). The CityEV, as its name implies, involves only Think City Racers driven by some goofy Europeans with funny accents as they race around to take the EV Cup.
You can’t make this up, folks. Not without multiple visits to Amsterdam for refreshment, anyway.
So the goofy little Think City electric car (which seats two if they aren’t Norwegians) is going into 2 Fast 2 Furious mode. The company trimmed the car’s weight by about 155 pounds. They did this by, get this, removing all of the interior amenities (radio, dash trim, seating, and steering wheel) and replacing the must-haves with lighter alternatives. BYOiP (bring your own iPod).
The Racer has only one seat, which is a (likely highly uncomfortable) lightweight racing chair with a 4-point harness. The steering wheel is now a lighter-weight alloy version. The window glass is now all perspex plastic, which is much lighter than glass, but fogs up easily I understand. Alloy wheels, a lower suspension, and changes to the controllers (motor, battery) finish off the Racer’s appeal.
Think hasn’t said how fast or furious the new City Racer will be, but given that the original has a 65-ish top speed and a 100 mile range, and that the race driver probably doesn’t care about range, the Racer will probably have closer to 90mph and half the range with much faster pickup. That’s my guess.
They forgot a spoiler, though. The doors still open too. This isn’t a race car. It’s an imposter.
Either weld those doors shut or put on some gullwings! And slap a spoiler on there too! Preferably one of those ones that has all the drill holes through it to make it look more industrial and light weight. Hell ya. Europeans don’t know jack about what real racing’s all about. Gotta have the spoiler. Get with the program, Think!
