OK, so you’ve retired, the kids are out of the house, and you’ve got a lot of time on your hands. What’s more, those nice people you saw on TV were able to get you a “mobility scooter” at no charge thanks to your grandkids’ future taxes. So what do you do?

Why, you cruise the country on your new ride. That’s what you do!
A Norwegian couple, faced with a dilemma much like that I’ve outlined, decided to hit the road on their electric vehicles – wheelchairs. 300 miles later, they had traveled from Trondheim to Oslo. I’m sure the chair’s maker was surprised to find out that anyone would want to go 300 miles at 5.5 miles per hour (top speed) in one of their scooters. Let alone two of them.
It all started, interestingly enough, as a protest against the national train system which refused to allow them to bring their electric wheelchairs on board because they were “too bulky.” Given that the two seem to have the ultra-deluxe Cadillac models, I guess that’s understandable if you’ve ever been on a train. I don’t see these things fitting down the hallway too well.
That, of course, is beside the point. The couple took umbrage at the refusal and decided to drive themselves to Oslo. So they did. On their scooters.
Now I’m just trying to imagine the conversation and how they managed the battery recharge issues on this trip. I mean, 300 miles at a 3mph average is 100 hours in the seat. I wonder what the range on one of these mobility scooters is? Probably less than factory, given the decidedly non-aerodynamic modifications the two have obviously made.
But hey, this trip was a protest, not an eco-modder exercise. More power to ‘em!
