I received the following from Eva Hakansson today:
We did it! ElectroCat, with Pike’s Peak veteran John Scollon riding, set the very first electric motorcycle record for Pikes Peak.
On July 16th, I may try for a new drag racing record with the new battery pack.
Here are the details:
http://www.evahakansson.com/Not entirely sure if we are going to do this particular event next year. (We may change our minds, of course.) It is a very difficult race and it takes a HUGE amount of time, money, and effort for a single day of actual racing. ($1500 just in entry fees.)
My detailed and tireless preparation paid off in this event. The altitude gain and the weather extremes are very tough on components. Motor cooling is a balancing act (and required serious bench and field testing.) Picking the optimal pack size required a lot of testing and planning. The combination of dirt road and pavement makes gearing selection challenging. (I brought 12 different ratios to select from, and we needed them all to find the best ratio to make it to the top.) The course is very rough, so you must take care to mount everything securely and take extra care with every electrical connection.
Now that we have “broken trail” on the PPIHC, I’m sure the competition will be formidable next year. We have a HUGE leg up on other teams in that we know _exactly_ how to design for this event, but it will take serious support to build the winning electric bike next year. It is quite possible to win the bike division overall with an electric because you can implement traction control and you don’t have shift pauses that break traction. We would not have the resources to do it out of pocket ourselves, however. We can indeed do it, but we can’t do it all by ourselves.
Thanks again for your support,
Eva and Bill

Congratulations, Eva and the rest of the team!!
