BMW ActiveHybrid 7 Gets Fat Tax Credit of $900!

Hell ya! Just when you thought the $102,500 price tag of the new Beamer would break the bank, the IRS steps in to give you your due with a whopping $900 tax credit after you purchase one of these ActiveHybrid 7s.  I’m sure your banker will let you float the check until that tax refund arrives…

I’m not sure which is more pathetic: the teensy writeoff the IRS has approved for this car or the fact that BMW felt it was exciting enough to put out a press release on it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love writeoffs.  They’re the next best thing to not paying in the first place.  Taxes suck and are the bane of all that is good and holy.  But still, this ActiveHybrid 7 is even more of a greenwash than your SUV-driving neighbor who bought a Prius to “commute” in.  Comon.  It gets 17mpg for hell’s sakes.  My pickup truck does better than that with a full load of hay!

Here’s some advice for the big spender looking for a car: don’t get the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 because you think it will be eco-friendly.  It ain’t.  Instead, get one of the 300 series diesels – they are WAY more efficient.

Jim Travers at Consumer Reports is right: the ROI on this purchase is probably not going to pay off within a century.  Especially given the 7 series’ bad reputation at CR for having more than a few problems.
