Opel Ampera To Make 370-mile “Cross Country” Road Trip

For some reason, this headline is “news.”  Probably only to GM-Volt.com, who are all about the Chevy Volt (the Opel Ampera is the Volt’s European sibling).  If you didn’t see anything in the headline above to make you wonder why this is news, then… well, I guess I’ll have to spell it out.  I was going to anyway.  It gives me a chance to make fun of Government Motors again.

First off, I live in Wyoming.  Interstate 80 runs through the southern end of Wyoming from West to East and is 402 miles long.  What I’m getting at is that my state is longer than the “cross country” road trip Opel plans to drive their Volt through.  The Opel’s big trip is from Russelheim Gernmanay (their spelling, not mine) to Geneva, Switzerland (370 miles, non-stop!) to make the Geneva Motor Show next week.

Here’s the Google Map of this arduous road trip of 566km, which will require at least five hours to complete:

Wow. Impressive.  Definitely newsworthy.  Here’s something hilarious: Opel’s spokesperson was at a loss when they asked if the whole trip could be made in one go.  First, it’ll be “non stop!” then it’s “we can probably do it on a tank of gas, maybe.  Who knows?”

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.  Apparently, GM uses the same idiot marketing folks in Europe that they do here.  At least we know they’re getting double duty out of our bailout bucks.  Right?
